Friar Lawrence

April 17th, 1535
Today while I was in my garden tending to my medicinal herb garden around my house, I received a visit from my friend Romeo. He told me about this girl named Juliet who he wanted to marry. I was extremely surprised by this because I thought that he was still with Rosaline. To try to help him, I advised Romeo that those who fall in and out of love quickly are more likely to have problems. Although I was reluctant at first, I was hoping that the marriage would bring the two feuding families together.

Today was the day that I married Romeo and Juliet at the St. Peter's church. I was very excited to do this because I am hoping that it will bring the 2 families together and stop the fighting. The marriage had to take place very early in the morning so Juliet's parents would not find out. Although I was happy to marry them, I gave Romeo some advice, and that was to move slowly because those who rush are usually the first ones to fall.

Today Romeo came to visit me and informed me that he had murdered Tybalt and the Prince Banished from Verona. He was extremely distraught and and I was trying to calm him down. Romeo was insisting that being banished from Verona and not being able to see Juliet was much worse than death. There was a knock at the door, so I sent Romeo to hide in my study just in case it was the Prince. It turned out that it was the nurse and she was looking for Romeo to make sure he was safe and alive. When Juliet's nurse tells Romeo how sad Juliet is due to the loss Tybalt, he becomes suicidal and offers to stab himself. This makes me worried so I start preaching to Romeo about how important he is to Juliet and if he kills himself it would be like killing Juliet to since she is a part of him now. Furthermore, I told Romeo to be thankful that he wasn't sentenced to death by the Prince. This calmed Romeo down and he starting thinking logical again. To try to resolve the problem, I told Romeo to go climb to Juliet's balcony and spend their wedding night together that they never had. After that I told him to run away to Mantua then he is to come back when I send him a letter, and ask for forgiveness from the Prince. I am hoping that this will the 2 lovers together and allow them to live happily ever after.

While I was in my cell today County Paris came to see me to talk about his plans to marry Juliet. I was slightly nervous talking to him about this since I just married Juliet to Romeo, but I continued on. When Juliet came in and began talking to Paris, she was courteous to him, but I could tell that something was not right. As soon as he was gone, Juliet became very upset at the fact that she was to marry County Paris. When she said that she would kill herself to solve the problem, I knew that I had to do something and fast! I knew about a special herb that would make a person appear dead for 42 hours, and I decided to give it to her. I told Juliet to take it when everyone is out of her room so she will appear dead in the morning. Then she will be laid in the family vault, still asleep, while I send a letter to Romeo in Mantua to come back and be with Juliet. Then they can run away to Mantua and live happily ever after, I hope...

Today was the day that Juliet was to take the potion and I was hoping that everything would go well. Everything was going according to plan until Friar John, the friar who I sought out to give the letter to Romeo, showed up at my door panting. He informed that while he was in Mantua, he became quarantined because health officials feared he had the plague. When he told me that he was unable to bring Romeo the letter, I knew that I had to go to the cemetery before Juliet woke up in the dead man's tomb.

Tonight I ran as fast as I could to the Capulet tomb to bring Juliet out and comfort her as she wakes up. When I arrived I was surprised to be met by the Montague servant, Balthasar. I feared that something horrible had happened, and I was right, as I usually am. I was shocked to see both Romeo and Paris dead in the Capulet tomb! Juliet awoke, and I told her that Romeo was lying dead next to her, as she was still a little woozy. When she told me to go away, I left without asking questions, but I feared on the inside that she was going to kill herself too. I left the cemetery, but was later called back to explain myself. I felt extremely bad about the whole situation because I was the one who married them, and I was the one who gave Juliet the potion. When I found that Juliet had killed herself too, I began to feel worse and worse because I was the one who caused the situation. I knew that I had to be a noble man, and I took full responsibility for the grief I have caused the Capulet's and the Montague's, and was willing to take any punishment given to me by the Prince.
