Theme
Of all the themes present in Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, one of the most prominent and significant of these is the inevitability of fate. Fate is constantly used by Shakespeare throughout the play, and it often foreshadows or alludes to future events. Furthermore, due to the fact that fate controls most of what happens to the characters in the play, it is said that Romeo and Juliet are "star-cross'd lovers" (Shakespeare.Prologue.6). The theme of the inevitability of fate was also present in the book, The Hunger Games. Fate is what brought Katniss and Peeta into the Hunger Games in the first place, and fate is what brought the 2 lovers out. The duo became known as the "Star crossed lovers of District 12". It was the Gamemakers controlling Katniss and Peeta in the arena, so their fate was in the hands of the Gamemakers. In the book, The Hunger Games, the star crossed lovers, Katniss and Peeta, must show that they love each other to survive in the arena, whereas in the play, Romeo and Juliet, they must not show their love for each other if they want to live. The theme, the inevitability of fate can also be applied to today's society because fate is something one cannot prevent, nor has control over.
